CONNECTION BLOCKED
Illustrative timeline · Sample investigation
01 / SIGNALA suspicious connection is blocked.
An internal system attempts to reach a suspicious external destination. The security control blocks the connection and generates an alert. Blocking the attempt addresses the immediate action—but does not establish why the system tried to connect or whether other activity occurred earlier.
The SOC begins reviewing the available event details and surrounding activity rather than treating the blocked connection as a resolved incident.
02 / INVESTIGATIONAn administrator's account is involved.
Analysts correlate the alert with available account and system activity. An administrator's credentials appear in the investigation, but the administrator is asleep and not performing the observed activity.
That discrepancy raises a more important question: how were the credentials being used, and what other access might they have enabled?
03 / ROOT CAUSEThe investigation leads to a laptop.
By following the available evidence, analysts trace the activity to a laptop being prepared for a new employee. The laptop lacked endpoint detection and response protection, and a compromised download was involved.
The investigation now goes beyond the original connection to understand the likely entry point, the credential exposure, and whether the activity reached other systems.
04 / RESPONSEContain the exposure.
The team disables the affected credentials and isolates the laptop, using available authority and coordinating with client personnel where necessary. Analysts also review accessible security evidence for indications of activity elsewhere in the environment.
The objective is not just to stop the observed connection, but to limit further access and assess whether the threat has spread.
05 / FOLLOW-THROUGHDocument what happened—and what changes.
Analysts assemble the sequence of observed activity, actions taken, and any remaining questions. Findings and recommendations are documented for the client, including the exposure created by the unprotected laptop and the affected credentials.
The investigation informs follow-up improvements and helps the client understand both the immediate event and the conditions that made it possible.
